In an unprecedented move, the state of New York recently authorized a new plan that would pay women as much as $10,000 to donate eggs for the purpose of human cloning and embryonic stem cell research. Unelected appointees on the New York State Stem Cell Board agreed to the highly controversial plan—the first of its kind in the country.
It sounds like something out of a science-fiction film—the state induces women to subject themselves to highly dangerous hormonal therapy and undergo an extremely painful procedure to extract the eggs for the princely payment of $10,000. Then the state sacrifices the egg to the god of research as scientists use the harvested egg for human cloning and embryonic stem cell research.
