Gov. Doyle picked Madison Atty. Lester Pines to defend him against WFA’s challenge in Appling v. Doyle.

Gov. Doyle’s comments are particularly interesting:

In light of Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen’s decision against defending the state, it was necessary to appoint outside counsel at additional costs to taxpayers.

Funny how the governor didn’t express that same concern over taxpayer dollars when approving the state’s budget earlier this summer with an increase of $3.63 billion in spending.

Pines, the governor’s go-to lawyer, represents Prof. Bill McConkey in his challenge to Wisconsin’s Marriage Amendment in McConkey v. Van Hollen.
